Make Your Own Custom Travel Map

Feb 8,2025

Travel superhero mode. Whether  going to a new city...

or around the world.

🗺️ Why Make Your Own Travel Map?
If you’re anything like me — over-planner, itinerary addict, spreadsheet warrior — you get the struggle of knowing where everything is on a trip. Before discovering custom travel maps, I printed paper maps, scribbled all over them with colored pens, and numbered every café, museum, and “maybe-we’ll-go-here” spot. 🖍️ Fun to look at? Maybe. Useful on the go? Not so much. Then I found out you can make your own personalized map using Google Maps that lives on your phone, and suddenly vacation planning got so much easier (seriously, hallelujah 🙌).

📍 How to Make It (Step-by-Step)
Start by heading to Google’s custom maps page at the special URL and clicking “Create new map.” Give your map a fun name — something like “Best Eats in NYC” or “Coffee Shops I Swear We’ll Visit.” Then, in the search bar, type in places you want to mark: address, café name, museum — whatever! Each time you find a location you want to save, click “+ Add to map.” You can repeat this as many times as you like until your map starts looking like a constellation of adventure dots.

🎨 Organize & Customize
Want your map to make sense at a glance? You’re in luck. You can change pin colors and icons so restaurants look different from sightseeing stops, coffee shops have their own style, and plan B locations practically beg to be explored. Add notes and even pictures for each place — like what dish you absolutely want to try or a quick reminder of why you picked it. Personalization = instant joy every time you open the map.

📅 Layers Are Your Friend
Think of layers like transparent sticky notes that sit on top of the map. You can make one for each day of your itinerary, plus extras for backup plans (hey, we all know brunch lines can be long), shopping spots, must-see views, or — most crucially — coffee stops ☕. Turn them on and off to see only what you need at the moment.

🤝 Share & Conquer Together
Traveling with a buddy? That’s double the fun and double the planning chaos… or it was, until you hit Share. Just tap the share button underneath your map’s title, send your partner a link, and suddenly you both have access to add and edit spots. No more “So, where was that taco place again?” arguments.

📱 Access Anytime, Anywhere
Once you’ve got your masterpiece ready, you can access it from the Google Drive app on your phone anytime — whether you’re on the subway, wandering a new neighborhood, or debating between two bakeries. This isn’t just planning; it’s travel superhero mode.

✨ Final Thought

🌟 Remember: travel is about experiences, not perfection.
Things will go wrong — and that’s okay. Travel smarter, stay curious, respect the places you visit, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
